Twist & Shout Was Founded In 1996
|
Twist & Shout Training Center (Edmond Oklahoma) was founded in 1996 by Orson and Marketia Sykes. With the help of a local businessman, Twist & Shout grew all most over night from 75 students to 150 students in one week. The beginnings of Twist and Shout were very humbling, our facility was a store front with about 2,000sq ft. of space. The ceilings were 13ft high and there was not enough room for a competitive cheerleading floor. Thank God that we were located beside a park because that is where our squads would regularly practice. |
In the summer of 1997 we were blessed to move into a 7,500sqft facility. For the next three years we experienced tremendous growth in all areas of our program and in the fall of 2000 God had opened the doors that not only allowed us to move into a even bigger facility but we were now sole owners of Twist and Shout and of the new building (God is Good!) Twist and Shout continues to grow each year with the help of the Lord. We will continue to strive to not only help develop good cheerleaders and dancers but also good men and women who love God. |
Twist & Shout's All-Star Program
|
The Twist and Shout All-Star Cheerleading Program is one of the best in the country. In 9 short years our Twist and Shout All-Star teams have won over 50 national titles at major national championships. Tryouts for our teams are held in the spring each year. We have squads for every age and ability. Those that want to tryout for one of our cheer or dance teams that can not make the spring tryout, will have to make arrangements for a private tryout with one of our staff members. |
Our All-star members are very committed and sacrifice a lot to make their teams successful. All-star teams help promote leadership responsibility, teamwork and commitment, which are essential to being successful in life. Some of our communities best students and leaders will come from our all-star squads.

The Gym's Training Philosophy
|
The process of training should be fun! That's not saying that it's always fun, because sometimes it will be hard and at times, just plain work. Positive reinforcement is STRESSED in correcting the children, however, this is a potentially dangerous sport and sometimes negative reinforcement is needed to communicate the seriousness of the correction.
It is our responsibility to train each child to be the best of his/her ability and to help each child achieve his/her goal (each child's ability is different). The following items will be included in your child's evaluation:
1. Natural ability
2. Attitude in training
3. Fear level
4. Promptness in class attendance
5. Direct feedback from child and parent about goals and priorities
|
Each child should be able to reach his/her potential in this sport at his/her pace without constant comparison to other children.
Parent involvement is critical if the child is to attain his/her goals and the following list includes some of our suggestions for parents:
1. Communicate the goals for their child to the Coach (i.e. recreational, school cheer squad, National Champion, etc.)
2. Bring the athlete to the gym for practice
3. Communicate to the Coach if the child is getting discouraged or frustrated or has his/her feelings hurt.
4. Be an encouragement to the child
5. We would not recommend coaching or disciplining your child for anything related to cheerleading or power tumbling (that's what we are here to do for you).
6. Trust our coaching staff to do our very best, not only to make your child the best cheerleader or power tumbler he/she can be, but also to provide a nurturing environment.
Please be consistent in bringing your child to class or practice. Example: If your child is absent often from the classes and practices, it will be difficult for your child to improve at a rapid rate.
Our coaching staff is always eager to discuss anything related to your child's training or our programs and activities, however, we would appreciate you scheduling an appointment or waiting until before or after class rather than approaching the coach during class time. We have provided a suggestion box at the front desk of our facility and we welcome your comments at any time.
We are dedicated 100% to making not only great cheerleaders and power tumblers, but also great young men and women. Thank you for the opportunity to be a part of your child's life.
